ABC News: "Full War" In Afghanistan

Via Rawstory, here's Brian Ross of ABC News on the conditions in Afghanistan:

The United States military is quietly carrying out the largest military offensive in Afghanistan since U.S. troops invaded the country in 2001.

"The Taliban has made a comeback, and we have the next 90 days to crush them," said a senior U.S. military official.

The offensive, "Operation Mountain Thrust," involves almost 11,000 U.S. troops and is focused on four southern Afghanistan provinces.

The Taliban has re-emerged as the Afghan government "has created vacuums of power" says the official. Proceeds from the growing opium trade in the region has helped the Taliban obtain new weapons and pay local officials.

90 days to crush them. Gee, I hope the 11,000 U.S. troops are enough for the military to complete the mission. I bet the four southern Afghanistan provinces cover a lot of land.

Comments:
Gee, it kinda makes ya wonder if it was a good strategery to up and leave three years ago.

Sssh. Don't tell anybody our stategery was to up and leave three years ago. Maybe the Taliban doesn't know we left yet.

That little Afghanistan adventure was launched on the back of a well publicized campaign about ridding the country of Taliban’s human rights abuses. That and getting Osama.
I guess on that basis it was a bit of a fuck-up. Osama still around, atrocities and abuses occurring on all sides.
The state the country was in then the Allied forces could have carried out surgical strikes from Pakistan and let the locals do what they have been doing for millennia.
How the hell are my Australian and Canadian troops, and perhaps your US troops, going to succeed when, as in Iraq, they don’t even know who is actually enemy?
It really is a case of our leaderships believing their own bullshit.

cartledge, I wish it weren't the case, but I tend to agree - the boys and girls in the WH really do believe their own p.r. Bad news, that.

These asshats that never did a day of active duty in a warzone have no clue on how to do anything..they didn't consider the consequences or even how to affect change once they "won" the ground war. Its abominable how they screw this shit up.

I can't argue with what you say, dusty. They announced four soldiers died in fighting in Afghanistan today. Karzai is complaining about the way the U.S. is handling the war. Things do not seem to be going well.
