Casualties Mount
17 dead American soldiers since Christmas. The casualty number for American military personnel in Iraq now stands at 2,990. December is on track to be the month with the most American military casualties for the whole of 2006.
Helluva way to end the year. And it doesn't bode well for American military personnel in iraq for next year either.
But that's what happens when the American mission changes from finding the WMD's/proving Saddam had Al Qaeda ties/fighting 'em over there so we don't have to fight them in London and Madrid/making democracy flower to the policing of a civil war.

And Jerry Ford, posthumously, drops another bomb on Bush. If the tactic is to get the Dems to refuse expenditure for more troops, thus becoming the excuse for failure; that approach is surely doomed as well.
and soon to pass 3,000, kvatch. Supporters of the war say it is nowhere near Vietnam levels, which is true, but they told us back in 2002-2003 that this war would take a couple of weeks. Now here we are just three months away from the fifth year.
cartledge, that seems pretty prescient on your part - there is little doubt the admin is looking for a scapegoat for this Bush-created mess - and a dem-controlled Congress that refused an escalation request would certainly fit the bill. I think Dems will use Ford, Powell, Abizaid and the Joint Chiefs as cover on this and note too how General Casey USED TO BE against the troop surge before he was for it. With only 11%-12% backing the escalation and most people now realizing that the admin has completely fucked the war, I think Bush is going to be hard-pressed to scapegoat the Congress for the ultimate failure of the war. But we'll see.
