I Heard Booing At The Close Of The New York Stock Exchange Today.

That can't be good, can it?

Oh, well.

The nice thing about the Wall Street story for the White House is that it took the "Taliban Tries To Kill Cheney In Afghanistan, 23 Dead" story off the top of the news headline page.

It's awfully hard to explain what a success story Afghanistan is (as Cheney has repeatedly done) when his secret trip to Afghanistan got leaked to Taliban terrorists in time for them to bomb the compound he was visiting.

Comments:
Setting aside the fact that the assassination attempt failed, that they could even get it planned and executed says volumes about how badly the situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated.

After two failed assisination attempts against Musharef, several against Karzai, and now one against Cheney, the Taliban and al-Queda are beginning to sound like The Gang Who Couldn't Shoot Straight.

Given the integrity of our vice-president, however, are we sure that the Taliban is actually responsible? Could it possibly be a publicity stunt staged to bring America back to support the Commander-in-Chief. (I started to say "behind the Commander- etc., but if you think you could get behind Bushie when there's shooting, you just don't know him.)

Or how badly the situation in Pakistan has deteriorated, kvatch - it's possible that the tip off about Cheney's whereabouts to the Taliban could have come from the Pakistani security services.

Either way, it's bad news.

kicksiron, I've heard that theory elsewhere on the Internets. I dunno, I suppose it's possible. But how does an assassination attempt against Cheney rally people to the cause when the assassination attempt happened in a country that Cheney and Company supposedly made safe after the 2001-2002 invasion?

To me, the suicide bombing reminds people that they took the focus away from Afghanistan and turned it to Iraq. I don't think that helps them politically.

rbe, I was just joshing, sort of. Personally, I don't give any credence to the Taliban claim that Cheney was actually targeted -- I am more inclined to suspect that it was a way for them to demonstrate their control of the area.

It's tragic, though, that such a bizarre scenario as a staged attempt could actually be the subject of discussion among people who aren't already in the nut house -- perhaps we are all conditioned to expect the vilest schemes from this administration by their past behavior, or that we have been taught to ascribe the most despicable motives to our opponents by ten years or so of Republican hate-speech.

Why don't you visit the following site and let me know what you think. The site belongs to an assistant professor at Kent State. Imagine, the taxpayers of Ohio employ this psycho.

That's a good point about the conditioning we've all got after 6+ years of these criminals. You always expect them to lie, cheat, steal, manipulate, etc. And I wouldn't put it past them to try and stage something to make themselves look like heroes. Given their ineptitude w/ everything but propaganda and p.r., I wonder if they could even pull it off though? (Did you see Cheney be so stupid as to demand to be referred to in press reports as a "senior administration official" because he wanted to be off the record, then use the first person when talking about the VP and continually refer to himself throughout the press briefing? This really is one stupid fucking man. Cunning, manipulative, deceptive - but ultimately very stupid.
