Bush Will Only Allow Rove and Miers To Testify To Congress If They're Allowed To Lie

That's why he won't allow them to testify under oath or have a transcript made of the informal "interviews." As Atrios said

The only reason to refuse to be under oath or even have a transcript is because you plan to lie and you want to do it with impunity.

That's it.

Meanwhile Bush addressed the nation tonight to say that his proposal to only allow Rove and Miers to talk to Congress if they're given impunity to lie is "reasonable." He repeated the word "reasonable" several times and said if Dems didn't agree to his "reasonable proposal," that meant they are just on a "fishing expedition" for "partisan purposes" to "score political points."

What gall. The preznut who had U.S. attorneys fired because they weren't "political enough" for him (i.e., didn't act like Republican hacks willing to place the welfare of the Republican Party above the integrity of the justice system) is now accusing opponents of being "political."

I don't know how this is going to end, but it is clear that the 30% preznut is going to mattresses to save Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, and perhaps himself from having to testify under oath about just what they knew and did in the prosecutor purge scandal.

Nixonian is right. That's quite a challenge Bush threw at Congress today. I don't think Congress can back away from it and retain any credibility.

Bush may be starting to unravel. Let's hope Congress applies some real pressure.
