I Heard The News Today From Brian Williams (Oh Boy!)

NBC anchor Brian Williams appeared on Hardball via satellite from Iraq tonight to shill for the preznut and his surge policy. He told Hardball host Chris Matthews that so far things seemed to be going pretty well in the areas where the extra U.S. troops have gone. He said that a three star general had flown him around a large swath of Iraq today and the country seemed better than the last time he was there. Not once did he mention the news from Iraq today, so let me do it for him. First, the most horrific violence:

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber devastated Baghdad's historic booksellers' district on Monday, killing 30 people and setting shops and cars ablaze in defiance of a U.S.-backed crackdown on violence in the Iraqi capital.

A thick plume of choking black smoke rose over the city after the attack, the deadliest to hit Baghdad in a week.

...

A Reuters witness said ambulance sirens were sounding and the scene was in chaos, with pools of blood on the pavements and shop fronts destroyed, mangled debris littering Mutanabi street.

"There was so much smoke that I was vomiting," said the witness, who was in a book shop on the street when the windows were blown out by the blast. The witness, who works for Reuters, requested anonymity.

As firefighters doused the flames which reached up to the third story of some buildings, papers and book pages fluttered on the ground, some blackened, others bloody. Charred bodies lay almost unrecognizable, half buried in the rubble of shopfronts.

The bomb exploded around 50 meters (yards) from the Shah Bander cafe, a beacon of Baghdad's once thriving literary life.

"There are many shops set on fire and more than 15 cars were burned out," said the witness, adding he helped several casualties into a truck that took seven people away to hospital. "They were covered with blood," he said.

Police said the blast wounded 65 people. Three witnesses said it was a suicide car bomber.

Now some of the "smaller" incidents of violence:

BAGHDAD - A car bomb targeting a police patrol killed a policeman and wounded another in the western Adel district of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb exploded near pilgrims heading to the holy city of Kerbala, killing at least two people and wounding 10 others in central Baghdad, police said.

DIWANIYA - Gunmen killed a former member of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party in Diwaniya on Monday, police said.

BAGHDAD - The bodies of six people, including children, were found in Adhamiya district of Baghdad, police said.

KIRKUK - Gunmen killed a policeman while he was driving in the city of Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

ISHAQI - Gunmen killed five policemen in a drive-by shooting in the town of Ishaqi, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

ISHAQI - Gunmen wounded four policemen on Sunday while they were gathered in the garden of a friend in Ishaqi, police said.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen opened fire on pilgrims heading to the holy city of Kerbala, killing five and wounding 17 others in two separate incidents in southern Baghdad, police said.

SULAIMAN BEK - The bodies of four people, shot and tortured, were found in the town of Sulaiman Bek, 90 km (55 miles) south of Kirkuk, police said.

BAGHDAD - The bodies of 20 people were found shot dead and some showing signs of torture on Sunday in the western half of Baghdad known as Karkh, police said. Baghdad has become increasingly divided into Shi'ites on the east and Sunni Arabs on the west side of the Tigris, though there is a crossover.

DIWANIYA - Gunmen killed a former member of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party in front of his house on Sunday in the city of Diwaniya, 180 km (110 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

So if you just listened to Brian "Shill" Williams on either Hardball or the NBC Nightly News tonight, you'd probably think conditions in Iraq have been made "more secure" by the additional U.S. surge troops. But a brief look at the news wires tells you that you would be wrong.

It's a shame that Brian Williams can't honestly report the news from Iraq. But I guess if he's going to get ferried around Iraq by a three star general, they're not going to take him to the places where the tortured bodies and car bombs are and he's going to be less likely to report all the carnage.

Comments:
To paraphrase a president, I guess it all depends on what your definition of "going pretty well" is.

Oh, for the good old days of that degenerate presidency with its budget surplus and years of peace.

abi, my step mother says that when Bill Clinton was president, we were the laughing stock of the nation. She feels that way because he got caught lying about getting blown in the oval office. And yet, w/ the U.S. in the process of losing two wars, w/ the surplus long gone, w/ the gap between superrich and everybody else even wider than before, w/ the the world disgusted by our torture policies and our rendition policies, she has no problems with the current state of things.

Now if George W. were to get caught lying about getting a blowjob... but as she tells me, that won't happen because he's a "man of christ."

I'm sure your step mother is a very nice lady, but I'm afraid she's been had by the hypocrites you talk about in your Guilty post above.

You have to give them credit, tho. They are very good at spinning truth on its head.

Nahh, she's not that nice. She's kinda phony and arrogant.

You're right about the boys and girls in the WH being good at spinning the truth on its head. Unfortunately that's about all they're good at.
