Carnage in Iraq

The Associated Press runs down the list:

BAGHDAD - Six bombs exploded in predominantly Shiite sections of the capital Sunday, killing at least 45 people in a renewal of sectarian carnage that set back the U.S. push to pacify Baghdad.

Beleaguered Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki suffered another blow later in the day when two officials close to the radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr said his followers would quit their Cabinet posts Monday, raising a threat that the government could collapse.

North of Baghdad, two British helicopters crashed after an apparent mid-air collision, killing two service members, U.K. officials said.

The U.S. military announced three U.S. troop deaths — two soldiers and a Marine killed in separate incidents.

And in the holy Shiite city of Karbala, health officials raised the toll from a bombing Saturday close to one of the sect’s most sacred shrines, saying 47 people were killed and 224 wounded.

This afternoon on CNN's Late Edition I learned from the very smug Andrea Koppel and the even smugger John Roberts that Democrats have already lost the political battle over the Iraq war funding.

They all had a good laugh over that.

In the meantime, the preznut's surge policy is failing badly, the government in Iraq is collapsing around Maliki's ears, the carnage in Iraq continues unabated, and more Iraqis, Americans and Brits are dying then before the surge started.

Nothing about that from the smug Andrea Koppel or the even smugger John Roberts, however.

POSTSCRIPT: Andrea Koppel is particularly moronic. On Friday, she reported there was no "smoking gun" or anything damaging to the White House in that day's DOJ document dump (even though the documents showed that former Gonzales chief of staff Kyle Sampson had proposed replacement candidates for the purged prosecutors a year before they were fired, a clear contradiction from the testimony he gave to the Congress last month.)

Koppel also failed to note that the one of reasons why there has been no "smoking gun" found in the recent document dumps from the WH and the DOJ in the purge matter is because millions of emails from WH officials have been erased and the administration is refusing to release others related to the investigation.

I mean, it's hard to find the smoking gun when it's been destroyed by the criminals, right?

Nonetheless Andrea Koppel repeated the same claims about the purge documents today on Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer.

Now I dunno if Andrea Koppel is stupid or on the WH payroll, but clearly she's one of those things since the NY Times, the Washington Post and MSNBC all managed to get the story right back on Friday. Somebody at CNN should have corrected Ms. Koppel's reporting of the document dump story by now, but I guess they were too busy covering the National Conversation over the Imus Firestorm to get around to it.

No wonder CNN's ratings are in the toilet. They have some truly abysmal reporters.
