No Fundamental Shift In Opinion
Americans STILL hate this war, no matter how the shills on the TV spin it:
Ed Henry and Cokie Roberts told me yesterday on the Sunday shows that Americans are lining up behind their preznut because they don't want to lose a war.
But three polls released in the last two days, the Post/ABC News poll, the NY Times/CBS News poll, and the Gallup/USA Today poll, clearly show a majority of Americans think this war is lost, don't believe anything the administration or its shills in the military say and want to set a definite timetable for withdrawal.
Why can't the news media, especially the electronic news media, report the news as it is instead of reporting GOP talking points and administration spin?
Could it be they're so blinded by the insularity of Beltway conventional wisdom that they don't even know what is real and what is b.s. anymore?
Are they just on the take?
Or are they so worried still about infuriating right-wingers that they dutiful report the news in a Mark Halperin/Hugh Hewitt-approved manner?
I'm betting it's a little bit of 1 and 3.
But I bet there are a few Armstrong Williamses and Maggie Gallaghers out there too.
WASHINGTON — On the eve of critical testimony to Congress by Gen. David Petraeus, most Americans are skeptical of what he will say and support setting a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq regardless of the military situation there.
A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday and Saturday finds that a White House push to spotlight progress in Iraq, including President Bush's surprise stop in Anbar province last week, hasn't fundamentally changed attitudes toward the war.
While a third of those surveyed say the "surge" of U.S. troops this year has made them more confident the United States will accomplish its goals, a majority calls the invasion a mistake and predicts the war will be lost.
A record 60% say the United States should set a timetable to withdraw forces "and stick to that timetable regardless of what is going on in Iraq."

Asked about Petraeus' testimony, 53% of those surveyed say the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq will deliver "a biased report that reflects what the Bush administration wants the public to believe." Four in 10 say it will be independent.

We can quibble over whether "predicting the war is lost" is the same as "thinks the war is lost" as I wrote this morning, but the fact is, Americans know that no matter how much George, General P, St John, Holy Joe and the rest call for another bunch of friedman Units in iraq, NOTHING will get better.
That's because the time to fix the problems is long past. While Bremer was undoing the Iraqi army and trying to set up a tax-free Ayn Rand land and Rummy was denying an insurgency even existed, the insurgency was sowing the seeds of sectarian hatred with car bombs and the militias were getting ready for when the U.S. finally leaves.
